DESPERATE MEZZOS

Desperate Mezzos

If you’re into opera, you may have noticed that most of the plum female roles go to sopranos and that higher voices seem to attract the lion’s share of fame and fortune! Desperate Mezzos were formed in 2017 partly to challenge this notion, but more importantly to get a chance to sing together and have some fun at the same time.

Desperate Mezzos are Valerie Parker, Rebecca Smith and Victoria Manders-Wood and, together with pianist and honorary Mezzo Tim Tozer, we’ve all been friends for more than 20 years. During that time our paths have crossed and interwoven many times: we met in York and our first encounters were through York Opera and the De Costa Academy of Singing. We Mezzos all attended the Royal Northern College of Music; Vicki and Becky also studied at Leeds College of Music; whilst Val and Tim have participated at the Oxenfoord International Summer School, working with Dame Anne Murray and Malcolm Martineau amongst many inspirational artists. In addition, Vicki has sung with the choruses of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park, has toured the USA with Carl Rosa Opera and has worked with Den Nye Oper in Bergen.

From what you’ve read so far you may be thinking that we’re only interested in opera, but we don’t take our classical heritage too seriously and we’ll sing anything that gives an eager Mezzo the limelight! If you come to our concerts, you may well hear some opera or classical songs, but you’re just as likely to get a musical theatre number or something written by Billy Joel, Kate Rusby, Flanders & Swann or Victoria Wood. We hope there’s something in our programme for everyone ... and we even have some songs of our own!
