Gamelan Sekar Petak is based at the University of York, having been commissioned by the Department of Music and hand-crafted on the island of Java in Indonesia in 1981. It was the first purpose-built Javanese gamelan in a British university and is one of the oldest in the UK still in regular use. It is a proudly Yorkshire gamelan and its name, which translates as 'White Flower', is a reference to the Yorkshire Rose. Gamelan Sekar Petak is played by an inter-departmental student ensemble and two thriving community groups, as well as forming a key part of the University's outreach activity with young people. Gamelan Sekar Petak has toured extensively across the UK and has played internationally in Italy and Ireland, as well as making appearances on children's TV programmes for BBC and ITV.
